argh it still doesnt work! when i replace the compare() function with the 
workaround you suggested, i get an error about invalid lvalue in assignment or 
something.

BTW, I've noticed quite a few bugs like this, i even mistakenly filed a DJGPP 
bug report, but was notified of my error. So, im wondering, is whoever 
maintatins the GCC libraries aware of these? If so, are they gonna be fixed? 
Not like im royally pissed or anything, but ive seen a lot of posts on the 
mailing lists about these.
