The zoneinfo directory contains data needed for programs that must
recognize and/or convert dates from multiple timezones.  For this
purpose, it contains entries describing every timezone in the world. 
The FAQ (v2/faq202b.zip) describes the zoneinfo directory in greater
detail in section 22.16.

Basically, if you don't think you will need it, feel free to compress or
delete the directory.
