One example I am aware of - ET4000 chip based cards can do a linear frame at the 14Mb mark on ISA cards - but only if the machine has 14Mb or less of memory. So upgrading a 8Mb or 12Mb ISA machine to 16Mb may cause you to loose linear framebuffer access!
