Subject: Overlong Gnu C archive files

In the Gnu C++ version 1.10 system as stored at site hpb.mcc.ac.uk, there
are these files:-

  1474560 Jun 1 12:30 gas211sr.tgz.000 gas-2.1.1.tar.z (part 000)
   232171 Jun 1 12:32 gas211sr.tgz.001 gas-2.1.1.tar.z (part 001)

  1474560 Jun 1 13:31 gcc241sr.tgz.000 gcc-2.4.1.tar.z (part 000)
  1474560 Jun 1 13:42 gcc241sr.tgz.001 gcc-2.4.1.tar.z (part 001)
  1474560 Jun 1 13:53 gcc241sr.tgz.002 gcc-2.4.1.tar.z (part 002)
  1074973 Jun 1 14:06 gcc241sr.tgz.003 gcc-2.4.1.tar.z (part 003)

i.e. 2 files zipped, then tarred, then converted again (it seemed to me) and
finally split. This proved very complicated. gcc241.tgz when put together
again was about 5,500,000 bytes long, and too big for my system to handle when
I attempted the next stage of unpacking. <<<Please>>> it would be much more
convenient if this matter (which I suspect is the source forms of GAS and GCC)
was split between several .ZIP files, each small enough to fit on a floppy,
instead of each on one terato-giga-enormous file which is so big that on
attempting to expand it through its various unpacking stages my 'tar-remover'
and unzipper filled my PC's hard disk with scratch loose chains and then hung,
and the matter ended with Ctrl-Alt-Del and 'CHKDSK /F' and 'DEL C:\*.CHK', and
not even part of the GAS or GCC matter expanded to readable program files.
