I tried this for a while, but there is a problem I could never work around.
The CPP directs its output to stdout, so the 2r1 flag forces all CPP error
messages (missing includes, bad macros, etc) into the CPP output and then
causes the GCC compiler to puke on the imbedded error messages with no 
useful error messages.  (The intermediate files get deleted).  Any easy fix
without a different shell or operating system?
