I have never found a gnuish version of make that wouldn't hang a 386
when you have PC/NFS loaded.  The culprit appears to be the swapping
library.  After wasting an afternoon on it, I reverted to ndmake and
learned to live with its limitations.

The ultimate solution is to ditch MSDOS.
