You are right: the October 4 1990 version of gnuish make, archived in
make358.arc, is fine.  I am still left with the conclusion that
the executable of the same size, but dated Feb 22 1992 and archived
in mak358ax.zoo, is corrupt.  Either that, or there is a bug in
my zoo versions, one on a Sun and one on a PC, such that it is not
extracted correctly.  Seems unlikely.  Anyway, thanks for pointing
me to a working version.
