Well, I have joined the group of those who have found GO32 1.08 to be
a good way to kill their serial port applications.
    I was using ProComm Plus, v2.0 to communicate with my mail
machine, and trying to run DEmacs v1.2.0 (the Higashida-Hirano port of
GNU Emacs to DOS machines) simultaneously under DV/X v1.0 over IBM
DOS/V v5.0 (IBM's extended DOS for Japanese; it seems to be fully
compatible with MS-DOS 5.0 when in US environment).  The machine is
AMI 386/33 based with 8 MB RAM.  The serial port was able to accept a
few characters, after loading DEmacs, before going dead.  I have no
theories about what is going on, but for those who are working on the
problem at present, here is a fairly complete description:

1. start DV/X
2. start ProComm Plus on COM1, connect to host
3. start DEmacs using the following settings in DEMACS.DVP

   DOS Command:  c:\bin\demacs.bat
   Directory:  <default>
   Memory size:  450
   Writes directly to screen: on         Displays graphics:  off
   Virtualize text:  on                  Display DOS screen:  on
   Use scaled fonts:  on                 Uses its own colors:  off
   Uses serial port 1:  off              Uses serial port 2:  off
   Uses math coprocessor:  on            Allow close window command:  moff
   Close on exit:  auto
   System memory:  0                     Maximum program memory size:  768
   Maximum expanded memory size:  2048   Text pages:  4
   Graphics pages:  0                    Protection level:  3
   X keyboard behavior:  0               Keyboard conflict:  0

   Content of DEMACS.BAT
   C:\DVX\DVANSI
   C:\DJGPP\BIN\GO32 C:\BIN\DEMACS

   ProComm Plus is now in background
   DEmacs is displaying tutorial screen
4. Click on ProComm Plus, do 'ls' on host, get about 20 characters of
   response, serial port dies.  (Thus, at least a few characters are
   correctly transmitted, and a few correctly received, by ProComm
   after starting GO32/DEmacs.)
5. DEmacs tutorial screen disappears in background.  (This is why I
   suspect GO32/DEmacs of grabbing COM1 input.  But the tutorial screen
   may be timed to disappear.  Will check later, can't do it now
   without killing this session.)

DEmacs may also have crashed DV/X.  However, I have been unable to
reproduce that crash.
    Even if I cannot use DEmacs and communications simultaneously, it
is greatly appreciated that I can now run other processes while using
DEmacs!
